A mandir is a Hindu place of worship. In the ancient Indian language of Sanskrit, “mandir” literally means a place where the mind becomes still and can engage with God. It is not merely a venue for ceremonies and rites. Instead, for centuries mandirs have served as a place where spirituality, social services and culture flourish. They have been a place where the community can come together and unite in worship and service.
During his lifetime, Pramukh Swami Maharaj revived the ancient tradition of mandirs by constructing over 1,100 mandirs in places as disparate as tribal villages and cosmopolitan cities. In the United States, BAPS has established 105 mandirs, including five traditional stone mandirs in or around Houston, Chicago, Atlanta, Los Angeles and Robbinsville, NJ, and the BAPS Swaminarayan Akshardham in Robbinsville, NJ.
