For many Indian American families, America’s 250th anniversary is not just a celebration of history but also a moment of heartfelt gratitude. Gratitude for the freedom to gather in prayer, to raise future generations rooted in faith and values, and to serve communities across the nation while proudly embracing both spiritual and civic identity. This summer, BAPS commemorated America 250 across the United States through nationwide events and service initiatives centered on faith, unity, and community harmony.
Guided by the teachings of His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj, who inspires devotees to live with humility, compassion, and respect for all, BAPS mandirs marked the occasion through open houses, interfaith events, local parades, patriotic cultural displays, and charitable initiatives led through BAPS Charities, like the annual Walk | Run benefitting local beneficiaries. Across towns and cities nationwide, mandirs welcomed neighbors, elected officials, and faith leaders to foster understanding and strengthen relationships built over decades of shared service and friendship.
Many celebrations highlighted the values that unite communities across backgrounds and beliefs. Through interfaith discussions on religious liberty and pluralism, as well as volunteer efforts supporting local causes, BAPS members reflected on how America’s ideals have allowed generations to preserve their traditions while giving back to the communities they call home. Some mandirs illuminated their edifices in red, white, and blue, while others featured patriotic cultural displays like red, white, and blue rangoli (traditional Indian sand art), as symbolic expressions of gratitude and patriotism.
For more than 50 years in North America, BAPS has worked to serve society through humanitarian relief efforts, health awareness initiatives, educational programs, environmental campaigns, and community service activities. These ongoing efforts reflect the organization’s guiding principle, inspired by His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj: “In the joy of others lies our own.” As America celebrates this historic anniversary, BAPS mandirs across the nation remain committed to building bridges of understanding, serving society with compassion, and working together to strengthen the communities they proudly call home.
